New renewable energy: organic photovoltaics

The year 2020 is approached. By this date, as stated in the applicable European Directive, all the civic buildings of new construction must be able to produce most of the energy they consume is approaching and with it must deal all players of the construction industry.

For the manufacturing world this major constraint involves constructing buildings to consume much less energy than current ones. Here comes into play because the exploitation extended to all surfaces of the building. No longer will need to install solar thermal and photovoltaic roofs but should be considered, as already noted has begun to do, to use the walls of the buildings, hitherto neglected for aesthetic reasons, cost and modularity.

In Germany, for example, is working on the PV of the future: the organic one. The project includes a photovoltaic coating to be applied to concrete walls, transforming them into a large photovoltaic system. The product is designed in partnership by Reckli, specializing in the production of elastic clips for concrete facades and architectural Heliatek, the result of a spin-off between the technical departments of the Universities of Dresden and Ulm. This project is expected to reach the market in a couple of years under the name of Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) and as verified until now has excellent heat resistance being able to withstand up to 80 ° C, it does not require ventilation, and overcoming so one of the most significant pitfalls of traditional photovoltaic panels.

These new panels have a higher return than traditional panels that could reach up to 20%, thanks to the ability to produce energy with diffused light on cloudy days. This is the main feature of this new thin film.

As for the aesthetic side of the photovoltaic facade, Reckli and Heliatek are working on films of different colors, in order to turn them into decorative inserts of the building. Finally, the coating will be provided in PET, to facilitate the recycling of the materials used in the construction of the facade organic photovoltaic integrated.
